Another good start is with a Target card,
They have most of the things you will probably buy anyways
They start with about a $200.00 - $500.00 limit and as you build credit they will increase your limit.
Whichever route you take be sure to make the payments on time and always pay a little extra (never pay the min. payment).
Good Luck

Get a debit card with a cc logo.  Acts like a Credit Card for purchases, but they come out of the bank acct just like a Debit card purchase.  Never run a balance.  If not enough cash, do not buy.

If he needs one to increase his credit rating the check card isn't gonna do much good.  Have you applied with Capital one or Associates.....pretty sure they're the standard predatory credit givers.  Be prepared for +-20% interest, you're not likely to get any better than that.

Get something with 12 months no interest and only put as much on it as you can pay in 12 months.

After that get a Best Buy card, or Sears, or whatever and buy stuff and pay it off immediately, or only buy stuff that has __ months no interest.

The only interest I've EVER paid was my car loan. I've never paid any interest on any credit card, and I have perfect credit. It's tough but you'll soon be irritated by the number of offers from other cards you'll start getting....most of them with __ months no interest.

If nothing else check with a local credit union.   I love mine because they have a thirty day grace period and I'm pretty sloppy about paying bills, and no annual fees.  From what I here you will build your credit quicker if you have a balance between 20 and 30 percent of your available amount.  Don't get a capital one card.  My wife hates them because she always get late charges for being a day late.

My credit cards are all set up for automatic pay from the checking acct.  But I never run a balance, so do not know how they handle less than full amount payments.

Not sure...lol. I guess "perfect" and "great" are the same, but I've been told on a number of occasions that I have "perfect" credit.

It's different between the big three companies, but pretty much anything over 800 is considered "great" or "perfect" by all three. I think one of them declares anything over 760 as great.

Thanks Dustin.

I've heard it mentioned many times but for some reason it happened to peak my curiosity this time.

Could possibly mean that there are no negative marks on your credit score. I was thinking more about this last night and I think that might be it.

You can miss payments (or whatever) and have negative marks on your record and still have great credit, but I've never missed a payment or made a late payment, or anything like that.

Maybe that's where the term "perfect" comes in?

Just a guess. Somebody in here has to know for sure.

NEVER a late payment, ALWAYS pay the full balance...  sounds pretty anal.  I'm exactly the same.   :smt001

I like to think it's "perfect", but that kind of system probably doesn't allow for such a designation.

That's pretty funny, considering I'm more of a procrastinator and not really anal at all (that just doesn't sound right...lol) about anything else.

I've just always known that your credit isn't something to take lightly and never really understood how people could put themselves into such holes. (Emergencies aside.)
