April 3
The Salmon season has opened and there has been some nice fish caught near the west edge of the Soquel Hole. The winds are staying down making trolling and mooching no problem. The best bet is trolling with Apexes, Krippled Anchovies, Krippled Herring, Spoons, and Kajikis. There have been some limits reported around 11:00 am. The bite seemed to heat up after the tide changed around 9:00 am. The fish were caught on both sides of the Soquel Hole from 50-150 feet down. The best numbers I heard of were around 36'50/121'59 and 36'49/121'58. The anglers on the east side of the hole at 36'49/121'56 and 36'49/121'55.

Soquel Hole is a ways out there right??....

Pretty sure I can't paddle that far....

Have Monday off, and if the weather cooperates might try to go out a mile or two and see what's what...then again I could just be wasting my time???

But...never trolled for Salmon so could at least work on getting my technique down...and just being out OTW and not at work is always a good thing!!

Thanks for sharing the info Brent!!

Sincerely,

Jim

Glad the numbers seem better up ur way looks like all of our sportboats got doubled as well as most private. Only 3 confirmed fish from the guy at the launch. I'm still gonna give it a try if wx works in my favor.

Can't wait for the reports.

I walked through the SC harbor a few minutes ago. The one crew I spoke with caught three around 200 feet down.

Went out from MBK with Alien, Mendohead and saw Luke, Scott and Etienne coming in.  No salmon for any of us, but the weather and water conditions were pretty nice.  Good to start getting back in shape again.

Looks like a fair number of boats didn't do so well either.

Trolled from MBK to Pt Pinos. Etienne trolled out to 240 FOW off Pinos where most of the salmon were caught by PB's trolling downriggers at 100-200'. I was only trolling 30-50' down which is max for my 3# downrigger weight. Won't say it was fun although the wind and swell weren't too bad. Sand dab bite was off for some reason.  :smt011 At least I got some exercise.  :smt005
