Make no mistake about the probability of encountering a bear.  You will.  I've been in only one situation where a gun was fired to scare off a bear trying to get into our cabin.  Probably didn't have to, but it certainly helped.  I've been in many more situations where we've had to shout and wave our arms to scare them off.  In some of those cases, if I had a gun, I probably would have fired it.  Of course, for the most part, I don't even carry pepper spray.  Go figure.

here is a short video of a Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull:

these were moderate loads, they were not full power loads.  even with the moderate loads the Alaskan wants to torque out of your hands, a very firm hold is required.  the noise from the short barrel is very loud.  it will cause hearing loss if you fire it without hearing protection.  I double up with foam ear plugs and muffs as the Alaskan is that loud.  the muzzle flash and blast are very noticable to say the least!  .454 Casull ammo is running at least 30.00 for a box of 20.  you can practice with .45 Colt ammo which can be slightly less expensive.  the Alaskan is a attention whore at any range you take it to.  I generally don't let others shoot it anymore as I had one guy almost drop the pistol because it just about torqued out of his hands.
Fishing is cheaper than therapy!
