On my back from getting my tire rotated, I got to see a HUGE mountain covered with snow off in the distance.  I'm thinking to myself this isn't Mt Hood, as it has a pointed peak.  No this thing was huge at the base and had a flat top.  Not really knowing which Mountain it was,(not thinking about mountains in Washington)  I decided it wasn't Mt Hood as I got to see it as I rounded a bend on 84/30 eastbound.  So what Mountain was it I'm asking myself. I had no idea that Mt St. Helens was so close.
As soon as I got home I looked on google earth.  It was Mt St. Helens!  I was surprised!  My Wife and I have always talked about seeing the volcano, and now I realize it's under a 75 mile drive for me now!
In the three months I've been up here, the skies have been, well cloudy 85% of the time.  On those days where it was actually sunny, not a cloud in the sky, I didn't go anywhere.  That day, however was a clear day and I was surprised when I first saw the mountain. Next weekend for me I just might have to take a drive!

Hah ha! The first thing you learn in the NW is to always take advantage of the sunny days. When it clears up around here it can be amazing!

I visited about 10 years after the eruption.  Grass and shrubs were just barely starting to grow in the blast zone, (which seemed to be a 4-5 mile radius).

WAY cooler/more impressive than I could have imagined.

Glad you could savor the moment!
I find more & more that one of my goals in life is to be able continually to take advantage of superb weather. When it happens, it's all the more satisfying.

Where's the pic, Jeeper?!!   :smt002

When I was a kid my hipster Mom and Step-Dad took us camping as close as the authorities would let us get to the simmering St. Helens.  It erupted shortly afterward and we would've been in a bad way where we'd camped.  Thanks for the lesson in not going near volcanoes, Mom!   :smt005

Actually this has been a very dry mild winter.  I think my first winter here I didn't see the sun at all for three months.
