Hello,

I'm doing an article / guide to kayaking at Ocean Beach. This includes angling. Has anybody on this forum ever fished here? Any details would be helpful.

Thanks,

Hugh

I launched and fish there once, years ago, and wouldn't do it again...even on flat days, you have to make it past 3 or 4 rows of good size breakers. Other than migratory halibut and stripers, there is not much to fish for, as there is little to no structure along it...
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I'd be cautious about promoting kayaking at that location. Ocean beach can be treacherous.

I'm not saying don't kayak there...I'm saying that those people who are competent enough to launch and boat there safely don't need guidance. And for those with the skills, there are still better places. I hope you don't consider this unfriendly...just my 2 cents.

I think he has surf kayaking in mind, which would be feasible at Ocean Beach. But even then, not for beginners and there should be a strong warning to stay out of the way of any surfers.

i can say that OB has the most difficult shorebreak to navigate. When the swell is below 2-3 ft...it could be done, but anything above that is a no-go. I ain't no pro-wave rider, but do have over 15 years under my wetsuit, riding waves from OceanBeach to Pomponio. It's not for the casual paddler, IMO.

Ocean Beach strikes me as an "opportunistic" launch site, not a "planned" one. That is: if you happen past it and live nearby and notice that the surf is flat and you have time to fish, then launch; but if you're planning a week ahead to kayak fish with your friends, then Ocean Beach is probably not the best meeting place.

I agree 100%  Very cool website.  It has every weather/tide/misc. info an angler could wish for, AND visually very easy on the eyes and easy to read.  Now if only you had a tool where you could enter a zipcode to see the same info and layout for other locations... it would easily become one of my favorite websites.

Thanks y'all for the advice. Agree it wouldn't be good to promote the venue without a HUGE caveat as I did with the windsurfing and kitesurfing guides. Not that much surf-kayaking traffic out here. I've seen 3-4 folks in as many months. Thought it might be useful for the advanced visitor to have some headzup on the nature of this break but you're prolly right in that they should be able to make a visual assessment on their own. Anyway, thanks for tuning in to ob-kc.com. Hope it increases both the quality and quantity of your time on the water.

Hugh
