Although I've been diving many times, I've never been spearfishing before. So I was wondering, what basic gear will I need to start out with? I imagine its not all that different from diving (snorkel, mask, fins, etc.). I'll be starting out with a polespear, because they're less expensive, and I'm not sure if I'll stick with spearfishing yet. Also, I plan on diving from shore (for perch/rockies), because I don't have a yak. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Yep, same gears for snorkeling plus weight belt, spearpole, and game clip/bag.  For safety please consider a float tube or dive board and dive knife.

You want to borrow a pole spear, PM me.  Needs new rubber as has not been used in at least 20 years.  Would give it to you, but son in law still talks of spearing.  I am located in Pleasanton.  Has a 4 prong trident style head.

Thanks for the offer, Califbill, but I already picked one up at the swap meet Saturday.

Floatline is clutch. Lose a $200 gun and you will realize why.
