Really, I consider it two different applications. If I've got to deal with cliffs, I'm climbing down with a board on my back. If I can launch easily, I'll use the combo yak/board approach. Definetly prefer the combo when I can do it. Kayak becomes your "mothership"

i love diving from my yak. yes,it limits the number of places i can launch, but i can cover so much more water. In addition, the fishfinder helps me find new spots that are in my range. I use a short kelp anchor to readily secure the boat before diving. I still have a boogie-board for shore dive days but i gave away my tube.

I use the yak like a mother ship, get to where I need to and use the tube to go diving, hauling abs, urchins, fish. Just be sure to stow all your belonging well on the yak. I've come back from dives and there's nothing worse than seeing your yak, upside down, minus a riffe speargun :smt013

a kayak can take the place of an ab tube......but an ab tube can never take the place of a kayak.  for one thing, ab tubes are really hard to sit in and paddle :smt003

If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.
