So, I am going to call Jim  Sammons of La Jolla Kayak Fishing next week to discuss an on-the water demo for fishing the famed kelp beds.  He would like an estimate as to how many people from NCKA would be  interested in a road trip in August so we can figure out the cost for a day.  My thoughts are doing the demo with him one day then free for all the next few days as well as fish Mission Bay.

If interested, let me know on this thread so he can hammer out some details.  This is not set in stone, just figuring out logistics.

I found this info:

Fish       Best Fishing Possible
Depth                Best Bait

Yellowtail Jul-Sep Year Round Surface to Bottom Live Squid

White Seabass Feb-Jun Year Round Midwater to Bottom Live Squid

Calico Bass Apr-Aug Year Round Surface to Midwater Anchovies

Barracuda Jun-Sep Mar-Nov Surface to Midwater Lures

Bonito Jun-Sep Mar-Nov Surface to Midwater Anchovies

Sheepshead Feb-Jun Year Round Bottom Shrimp

Halfmoon Feb-Aug Year Round Surface to Bottom Cut Squid

Whitefish Year Round Year Round Bottom Cut Squid

Treefish Year Round Year Round Bottom Anchovies

Since YT are really what i want to target, August puts it in the smack dab middle of the best time to fish for them.

I'm interested.

But it depends on how things go with The Baby, The Ranch, and The Girlfriend!

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

No problem RH, I am just looking at who is interested right now to discuss with La Jolla Kayak Fishing.   by saying you are interested does not mean you have to go.

I fins it weird there are only five of us interested in this right now.

BTW, hotels in the area can be found for cheap, like $50.00 a night.  As long as it has a bed and hot water, i could care less about anything else.  :smt003

I'm interested.
My daughter is due to have a baby in August and she lives in San Diego, so I planned on being down there to help her out any way. Some fishing there would be welcome too. Keep me informed.
Thanks,
Jeff

We are probably looking at 200.00 for an on the water demo.  I also like Mooch's idea of just hitting the So-Cal message boards and hooking up with locals, it really does not look difficult to fish that area, more a matter of catching bait before you hit the water (read Scripts pier at night).

Looks like most hit the water real early (still dark) and slow troll macs.  Then once the sun is high and dry, fish the kelp.

I'm interested.  I made in down there last July and got on the water 3 times in La Jolla, which was my first times fishing on the ocean in the yak.  I think Mooch is right, there's alot to learn from intel online, BEFORE you get on the water.  For instance, if I had used braided line, I might not have lost that yellowtail in the kelp when it ran for cover.  There was also plenty of bait near the kelp.

La Jolla is a fun place to practice beach landing, too.  Water is warm (no weatsuit necessary), and eye candy is everywhere.

Yes, I could spend another week there.  Here's a few pics of my trip.  The bonita was non-yak, but hellafun to catch.
