My brother writes the Marin IJ fishing column, and this week's article is interesting. At the bottom, he gives a breakdown of the water requirements for various crops, with alfalfa demanding the most water. He makes a strong case for cutting beef out of our diets. Enjoy!:

Well written, a bit slanted, but fishing columns are typically more editorial than objective anyways.  ;)
Funny, cause I was just watching something on CNBC about this very argument this morning.

I thought this quote was good (regarding the delta smelt):
"But it doesn't go to the ocean and no one fishes for it, so it's a great indicator of the river's health, and we need to pay attention to the fact that its population is crashing."

Hate to admit it, but after reading that... I want to go eat a steak AND some salmon.  :smt005

I never eat fast food as it is. I've heard of that movie but haven't seen it. I'll have to check it out.

Great article, but I have one objection.

He says grapes use about 2 acre feet of water.  On the North Coast, it's closer to 12", generally 10" being supplied by soil moisture and the remaining 2" by irrigation.

Grapes use so much less water than people think.
