I have an older Garmin gps 12 that I have never had a problem with until I left the batteries out for almost  3 months. I just went to check some waypoints in  anticipation of spring and found nothing but blank space. Had to reset everything.
I think I had left them out for a several weeks or so at other times with no problem.

Fortunately, I backed up the most important ones in a notebook. However, I've now lost a whole bunch of  God only knows waypoints , some of which may have been good.  On the plus side , I'll have a neater list that will be easier to navigate.

This thread is an excellent example of why you need to subscribe to the "Fuzz waypoint database system".
For NCKA members, all fees are waived.

Just send all waypoints to me and I'll sort, categorize, and archive them.  In event of equipment failure, one quick call or email, and your full collection of waypoints can be restored.   ;)

Garmin's come with software to sync between your PC and hand held for backups.  Its also cool for programming in MLS boundaries and plans of attack.  Sorry you lost your data though... :(
