Awesome report! I'll be ice fishing next week up at Eagle lake! The ice is usually only 3-6 in thick, so you can only walk out to your spot.

And you probably don't need a big gas powered auger either! We used both a 10" gas auger and an 8" battery auger. I had my doubts about the electric one, but it performed pretty great. Check out the videos showing how deep we needed to dig before hitting water!

(ignore the ending on the gas auger - for some reason this hole was having a tough time punching through - usually not the case...)

Here's another video of a "tip-up". It's just a minnow on a deadstick which when moved will trip a spring-loaded flag to pop up. When you're jiggin a hole 20-30 yards away and you see the flag go, you take off running! Then as you get close, the spool is spinning and you're just thinking about how to grab it and set the hook.

It's a great way to cover a little more area on the ice, and here is a brief video showing how the tip is set.

Good report.  Brings back memories.  In WI you could have three lines out per person, so with a few guys, you could have a whole bunch of tip ups strung out which generally meant plenty of action running for flags.  Much fun.

That looks like a blast!  Nice pix and videos also!  A few years back I played in a golf tournament on Lake Minnetonka in febuary (actually just an excuse for 2000 people to drag sleds full of beer around the lake), and we got to check out some of the ice fishing huts that people had out there.. some were actually small travel trailers that people had dragged out.

Ive seen people ice fishing up at Caples lake many times on the way to kirkwood.. keep saying one of these years I wanna try that!

Here is a pic of our "permanent ice house". A Honda generator completes it. But we're behind the times now - no satellite TV or internet!.

@ Mooch - it's called "acceptable risk" - the alternative is having your beer freeze and become undrinkable. Unthinkable!!

My one regret is that I didn't pull the old man's yak from the shed and get a pic on the ice with it. Then it wouldn't have been a "non-yak report"! This is a great lake for yak-bass fishing. There are several other linked lakes that are inaccessible by PB.
