So I really like sushi. I didn't really get into eating it until very recently so my knowledge on the subject is very limited. This year at Capitola while I was waiting for the hali bite I wondered how some raw bait would taste. Yup bait. Initially I had a small piece of fresh mackerel but I gave it the smell test and it failed. So I cut a thin piece off of a very fresh sardine and dipped it in the water and ate it. WOW it was actually very good. Not the slightest bit fishy.

What I'm wondering is does bait carry parasites like RF and salmon ect?  What I want to do is bring some prepared sushi rice and some soy sauce and make my own sushi OTW. I figure that bait may not have them since they are more or less pelagic or is my head up my you know what?

not exactly bait but I did eat a raw vermilion. Caught one a while back in Fort Ross and took it to my favorite Sushi restaurant and the sushi chef prepared it for me and my buddies = good stuff!

Please don't eat fish straight from the water.

The fecal counts and harmful contaminants can make you very sick, especially near shore like capitola and after a rain especially. You just as well rinse them off in the porta-potty.

Sushi is great, but clean it well at home before eating.

just my 2 cents

Mooch- that looks oh so good. I like the fact the the chef left the head on! When filleting I've eaten very thin peices of RF and that's how this all started. :smt001

Stoggie- wash with copius amounts of fresh water or something else?? I may be able to swing that on the yak. After all I have swallowed my fair share of salt water surfing big sets. :smt009

Thanks for the replies and I'll post the report w/pics if I try it.

sketchy at best. For maccks n the likes id wash in fresh water and soak in a vinegar/salt brine solution b4 eating. Do a search here. there are some nasty thangs in these fish. that being said, for years i would eat Salmon sashimi on the boat, straight outta the water b4 reading stuff on this site. Dodged that bullet........

my dad is an old time japanese fisherman and he recalls stories of being in Japan catching sardines and filleting them  on the boat for consumption.  Sardine sashimi is called Iwashi and if fresh, is supposed to be good.  All that being said, I have never tried it
