Sunday turned out to be a nice calm morning, so I headed out to China Camp to float in the sun. Missed the ghost shrimp at Mike's bait by 15 minutes, so settled for grass shrimp and herring chunks. Got on the water a little after the turn of the tide, and anchored up 100 yds or so off rat rock. Caught three sharks, one leopard and two of the brown ones, all 2' or less. Had a little trouble with anchor slippage when the tide really got going. I need to try a different anchor rig, and possibly a heavier anchor. I was a little surprised to be the only one there on such a nice day. Landed about 1:30 while there was still enough water to keep me out of the mud.

Mike, how heavy is your anchor?  I'm curious about the lightest one can get away with on a kayak, but I guess when the tide is really rippin even 10lbs wouldn't hold?

The one I've been using is about 5 pounds, I'm thinking I may move up to a 10 pounder.

I have a 10 pounder Mike that you can have if you want. I use a 5pound prong with a 4 pound weight clipped to it and that holds the T-15 in the biggest tide. An 8 ft runout. Smokin' and a little scary.

Good report Mike. Look forward to your future, a Dino 'show and tell'. May I suggest some anchor chain, brass or stainless comes recommended.

yup, dude on a spring tide that place can really get rippin'.  Almost like sitting in a river.  Bring two anchors, if you got it.

Thanks for the report.

A 10lb mushroom type anchor from Wal-Mart has always held me in place.

Galvanized is good for a rode chain. Plus its cheap.

nice way to get wet&&&avoid the mud....i use a 5lb folding one, with 2 salmon balls, hard-wired to the end, so it digs the blades into the mud.
i started with just the plain anch' and it drug in the heavy current tides, but since the 2-ball add-on, it hasen't budged an inch. :smt002
