No restriction on bait as far as I know. You may get in trouble if the find a frsh ling ab or whole salmon in your kayak

Fresh squid from the supermarket or Asian markets is the best bait.  May cost a little money ($3 lb) but crab at Costco costs an average $12 each so if you catch a limit it's a deal.

If you put the squid in those little plastic containers, do you have to chop them up or do you just put them in there frozen whole?

Cut up will release more scent into the water but market squid doesn't last very long in anything but commercial bait jars.  The jars alone will not get the crab in and keep em in on a short soak.  For hoops or pots on short soaks its best to have caged carcasses or chicken parts, gives em something to gnaw and keeps em busy.

Just an FYI - the sealions at the jetty have learned to suck, or otherwise somehow remove squid from bait cages without opening the cage....and they'll be on your rig in minutes.

Yep, saw many of them tried to steal the baits from your pots/nets last time I was there!  They're getting smarter...
