No call to work yesterday :smt009, so I headed up to Jones Valley and the Pit River arm on Shasta Lake :smt001

Trolled for trout a couple hours and hooked up a nice one that came off right at the yak, (video 1) :smt013

Then decided to try some bass fishing, which I rarely do and know even less about. :smt009
Started throwing plastic worms and before long started getting bites :smt001
Lost a couple, caught 3 smallish bass and got video of one of them. (video 2 ) all released unharmed.

You bass guys, is that a spotted bass? if not what?

Had a great time OTW  :smt003

Someone needs to school me on bass techniques and gear, because I had a lot of fun and want to learn more.
MattS, beenfishin, you guys want to "school me"? :smt002

99% chance that's a spotted bass.

the best way to know for sure is to feel its tongue.  if you feel a small tooth in there, it's a spotted bass.

shasta has a ton of them.  i cannot believe you are able to fish shasta on December 1st in shorts..crazy but looked like an awesome day.

Thanks Ben,
The weather was great, cold morning and warmed up to mid 60's with very little wind :smt001

Looks like a nice day OTW!  Thanks for the report and video Tad.

Way to go Tad!  It did look like a spotted bass.  I used to catch a lot of large mouth and small mouth, but the spots have pretty much taken over.  Sometimes you catch a hybrid though.  I have caught a few large mouths while fishing large baits.

I do well on green, brown and purple worms this time of year.  I like reapers, worms and brush hogs fished texas or caorlina rigged.  I put some crawdady smelly jelly on them and drag them slow.  I wait for the "ticks" and set the hook.

I also love drowning minnows and drop shotting minnow imitations in the creek channels along the bottom of the coves.  I drift along slow through the schools of fish stacked in the coves.  A great way to catch a lot of fish.

Maybe we can head out next week!  I will let you know.  Mon or Tues may be good, but I see rain is predicted.  I am good fishing in the rain though  :smt001
