I got the word from Ed Burell today that one of his skiff rentals picked up a WSB in 90-100 ft of water off pleasure Point  this weekend.  White shrimp fly jig on the drop.

Small- 29" around 10 pounds.

Goes to show you never can tell, and luck has a lot to do with it...These guys though they had caught a salmon and tried sneaking it past Ed, knowing salmon is out of season.  Pretty funny.

it was just around this time last year that Ed himself caught the 55lb monster WSB in that same area.

Might be worth trying for this weekend, though wsb are a real long-shot.  I probably will head down to Stillwater cove in Carmel with a bag of abalone guts, a box of swimbaits, and a heart full of dreams.

Nice...
The ghosts of the kelp beds make themselves known.
There's a resident school in the kelp off Pleasure Point, New Brighton and up by Natural Bridges.
We've had a few good bites develop in the area off Capitola, RWB Beach, Steamers,  Davenport and Ano Nuevo over the past five years, when the Davidson current swing in close enough to keep the water warm.
I got one off Monterey about five years ago when a wide open bite developed right in front of Del Monte Beach and Monterey Bay Kayaks.
Allen, great article on SC halibut fishing. Did you get any flatties this year? I managed to scrape a few and shoot one off Cowells, but it was pretty slow, considering the amount of time put in.
I was down at the harbor earlier today and there was a school of about 30 10-20 lb salmon swimming around right at the boat launch. We usually have a good showing in the harbor this time of year due to the fish trying to return.
To bad they're outta season!
Cheers and hope you all have a good winter
Livin tha pirates life full time! Catchin big cbass in tha kelp all summer long Have fun, live well, conserve the resource, and ask me about my secret fishing spots. but I probably won't tell you, cuz their secret!
