Figured I'd go a enjoy Veteran's day by soaking some bait at Monte's. I got there at first light and couldn't believe how crowded it was.  Must be a popular place? I paddled back to the same spot I was at on Monday and while baiting up another big daddy comes flying out of the water only ten feet from me.  HOLY SH.. It scared the crap out of me!  Being a sturgeon novice, I think I may have missed a bite cause I notice my rod doing the old slow pump at the same time marking a big fish.  How do you no when it's a fish or just the current?  I wasn't sure if someone was knocking so I gave it a couple more seconds then swung for the fences...nobody was home.  O'well. I did end up hooking into a few stripers though.  I kept one 24"er for dinner plus release half a dozen shakers. Sorry no pictures but maybe if I go this weekend I'll take a few.
To all you Veteran's out there, Thank You for your service and God Bless you all!

I was getting a little frustrated because sometimes if the kayak started to swing left or right my rod would start that pump motion too. Definitely a awesome feeling and a bit scary knowing there's a monster swimming under you.  Can't wait to mix it up with one of those :smt003

You should be able to feel the sturgeon tug if you hold your rod.

That swinging tide can be confusing, best to hold the rod during that time, you WILL feel the difference,

Thanks for the report, probably hit it Monday after work....

I've hooked 3 sturgeon in Montys and each one bit the same. Soft... really soft. I'm pretty convinced that holding your rod is pretty much a must there. You can definitely feel the difference between bites and junk in the water. But, if in doubt... swing away... it's way better to strike out swinging than thinking what if...
