My first mistake was NOT to bring her out when she was a Pup,

Now, 3 years later, we tried to take her out, she had plenty of room in the tankwell, but

would not stop, " Vocalizing...., whining "  it was like she was terribly frustrated,

and one of the worse times I've ever had on a a Yak...

she is a water dog, so it's not like she is afraid of water , 1/2 Lab,  1/2 Weimaranier,

I think the problem is, she wants to heard us, and wants to run,

I'm going to go out alone with her next,

But at the moment, she is impossible on the Yak...  :smt009

Any other thoughts on how to train her for Yak Adventures?

Start with a board off the ground at lest 2 or 3 inches use a piece of indoor out door carpet that u can move to your yak . slow process of teaching place stay and lay down start with place, one word commands. Every time you say place she should go there. eventually put your yak on the lawn and move the carpet where you want her and continue the lesson . Also you might want to make a soft rope ladder 2 ft long to help her get back in . Hyper dogs should be very well exercised before you ever consider putting them on the water. Also pick up a life jacket for her . If mine recovers to soon from, the excercise I make her swim all the way across the lake before she gets back in.
Good luck

I had some problems myself. I took him to a place where he could walk along the shore while i paddled alongside. After awhile i paddled perp to the shore outwards. He didnt like that and started to swim after me. Went back to land and after awhile he figured out getting in was the way to go.

Ditto that's what I did too my still a whines little on long paddles but if I'm fishing he is focused on that I think they just get bored. Something under the feet so they don't slide around helps a lot

My dog is 60 pounds but she isn't very tall which helps with center of gravity. She also is a whiner. She jumps right in when I tell her to but she is anxious in the yak. I tell her to jump in and make her swim off energy. She wears a life jacket when we are in cold water so she doesn't get hypothermia. She's only been on the ocean a couple of times but we take her out all the time in freshwater. She has swam many of the yakable rapids on the Yuba and American Rivers.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

Don

Bring lots of treats and work up to longer trips.Reward laying down every 15-30 minutes with an awesome treat. You do want them to lay down. Nothing good happens when they are moving aroud. If you really want to do this regularly, get a kayak where they can sit comfortably in front of you. If you want them to lay down for hours, it should be comfortable and somewhere you can make eye contact and pet them regularly.  Start at a lake where you can beach your yak to play fetch and relieve themselves. The most important thing is to not hook them which is why laying down is preferred especially with fly fishing. I also use a dog PFD wich really helps when you have to bring them back on the boat since they have a handle. Putting on the PFD becomes part of the ritual which is rewarded and eventually looked forward to. I end every trip with a walk around the lake and play. Del Valle and Quarry lakes are particularly dog friendly. The Quarry Lakes rangers will even give your dog a treat when you enter, something Molly looks foreward to. San Pablo and Lafayette don't allow dogs on yaks so avoid them. PM me this winter if you want to hook up for a dog trip. I fish with Molly every trip through the winter. Getting in and out of the yak can be a challenge. Being proficient with "lay down" and "stay" really helps as well as copious awesome treats.
