Well, I spent about 2 hours wading around the beaches around the end of 20th in Santa Cruz (Live Oak area).  This beach is just East/South of Sunny Cove and extends down to Pleasure Point.  I was hunting the elusive Barred Surf Perch (BSP).

Waves were moderate but breaking pretty far off the beach.  There were some rips but minimal offshore sandy structure.  Still, I stuck it out for as long as I had time fishing with 1/2oz weight, rigged Carolina style, and a MORF sprayed with crayfish oil as the bait.

The net result:  nothing but a few branches of Macrocystis and some eel grass (Zostera spp?).  Oh, and since I rode my bike down I also managed to catch a flat front tyre on the way home.  Good thing I had a spare tube and tyre irons in one of my bags.

The brand-new telescopic rod I bought is awesome.  Rated 10-17lbs, it has a nice light tip and is perfect for the surf.  It's only 7 feet long, but it folds down to 19" and fits in one of my panniers.   Maybe one day it'll even catch me a fish!

Maybe the problem was the way you mounted your fishfinder on your bike.

Yea those urchin spines are tough on tires.
