We got out to the fort and things looked good from the beach so we headed out..  bit of a breaker right at the sand but we got out between those so no probs.   Right out of the chute at 8 am the wind was 15 knots and gusting a bit more, the swell was manageable but the wind waves kind of slopped things up.    Its amazing how well a kayak rides in water like that.
So.. we got out past the kelp and started hunting for some structure but the wind was pretty nasty further out  and we found we were drifting off the good looking spots way too fast.  I tried dropping down and paddling in place in a few areas but that didnt produce anything and I thought a few hours of that might be tireing.   :smt012   Got snagged a few times but managed to paddle back upwind and free the gear, so we decided to go work the edges of the kelp beds for a while.    The fish in there were pretty much as Craig said..   blacks and gophers, nothing huge.   We kept a few of those to cook up for dinner and then tried to run a little south toward where the reef is but the wind was even worse so we went back to the kelp.
Around noon the bite picked up a bit, I got one half decent verm and Greg got his first ever keeper ling!  We had a great time, despite the wind and slop, managed to bring home some fish to make the wives happy, and we met a couple other yakkers out there as well. (Pernicus and a buddy of his, and one other guy who knew of NCKA but was not a member)    One thing I learned..  my next project or purchase will be a kelp clip!  Dragging kelp up on the boat worked ok and it was fun checking out all the multi legged alien creatures that live on them crawling around my boat.. LOL!
All in all.. a great day fishing and we had a blast!

Forgot to add in.. I managed to bust one of my ugly stiks while attempting to loose myself from the kelp at one point..  probably had that rod for 15 years and its given me many a great moment.  A moment of silence please..   :smt013   Truly a DOH moment and all for about 5 bucks worth of tackle.

Hey Bill,
I love Fort Ross! Good job out there! One of the most protected  coves out there. Let's go again before season closes.
