:smt002  The weather was flat calm for the bay almost like we were in a lake...

Booked a trip with local guide Dennis of Eagle Point Fishing last week.  Got lucky with a bluebird day and almost no breeze.  Very beautiful and calm out there.

Dennis said the fishing the day before had been slow - but I wasn't worried.  I had brought my parents in law out on the trip and wanted to get my mother in law hooked up to her first fish here in the states.  She doesn't speak much english so it would be difficult to give her instructions.

Soon after reaching our spot, Dennis dropped down and struck first blood.  He passed off the rod to my M-I-L and she took that fish down! Probably around 3-4lbs.  Excellent work.  First greenling in the box.  Funny looking creatures, kind of like some sort of trout.

We got back on the spot again and Dennis hooked up yet again!  MIL landed the second fish with ease - around 5 lbs.  Found another spot a bit deeper and Dennis hooked up again!  But this was a bigger fish.  Dennis asked me to clear the lines while my MIL tried to fight it.  But the fish was too strong and wily for her to handle alone.  Eventually I cleared the deck and went over to assist.  I don't think there is a word for "pump the rod" in chinese, so she couldn't figure out why the fish wasn't coming in.  I showed her the technique and helped out just a little bit =).

Eventually, she got the fish up and it was a pig!  11lbs+ on the scale. 32" when measured.

Strike a pose!  Man I look buff, I wish that's what my arm really looks like.

Net job:

And doing the Fishsniffer Pose:

At this point, the score was MIL/Dennis 3, Me = 0.  I of course couldn't just sit back and let them do that to me.  I quickly nailed a smaller one, let him go.  Then I hooked another nice fish, around 4lbs, but I got him in the tail.  Guess they were just slapping the lure around down there.

Next, I got a solid hit and set the hook hard - BIG ONE!  The fish was peeling line and bulldogging hard.
[Fightin him]

I hooked him in 200ft of water and with the line counter found I had only gained 10 yards in about 5 minutes.  Eventually I got the fish up - only around 5lbs but hooked in the dorsal!  No wonder he fought so hard.

In da boat!

Threw him back to do his thing.

Finally, I hooked and landed one more.  Decided to call it a day since the fish would not make it back down.  We headed over to emerald for some sight seeing and were back on the dock before 11am.

great day and a lot of fun, Thanks to Dennis! I highly recommend him - at $100/person/day he's as well priced as the ski run cattle boats but much better in fishing quality.  My mother in law is still talking about the big one that she landed.

Here are some additional pics:
Shootin' the shit

End of a great day:

Now, to plan another trip up there for next year.  An AOTY attack!

You can't fool me Ben, them not Greenlings! :smt002

You were not kidding with the beautiful weather, man-o-man.  Sounds like the only thing that was better than the weather was the fishing.  Looks like you guys were jiggin, no?

Great report!

Jigging yes, so much more fun than downrigging 160' down!  Can feel the little suckers bang your lure.

there is a word for "pump the rod" in chinese,

there is but you wouldn't want to to use it to her...i usually use it in a chinatown masage parlor..
sorry I couldn't resist.

awesome idea of sharing the excitment of fishing with older folks..I am sure she will never forget the experience...there can be no nobler cause.

great pics. especially w/ the reflection.

thanks for sharing,

dave
