Yup, everything Al said. And yes goop just the noodle donut. Mine does not leak. I wrapped the noodle dpnut in duct tape, keeps it from tearing down the side if bumped or if your ducer fits tight. Ive knocked the crap out of mine stuffing rods in the hull, it flexs nicely, doesnt rip either. Still leak proof, dam near bomb proof. Easy to do.

So you all had goop failures, eventually?

It's just funny that I'm so against the grain, it seems...  opposite of everyone else, when I thought I was finally catching up.

The gooped transducer eventually developed air bubbles underneath which killed the sonar signal.  I experienced this 4 times, 2 each on 2 kayaks.  Storing and transporting the kayak upside down certainly didn't help.  I decided to avoid this issue altogether by gooping a foam block.

The transducer fits tight in the foam where it will stay put even when upside down.

This is becoming an eye-opener for me.  I'd like to say it'll help me be ready for my pending goop-failure, but I'm more likely to just put off doing anything about it until the goop poops out on me OTW...   :smt002

Thanks for the goop advice.   :smt001

By the way, I am really happy with my decision to go with a foam kickboard as opposed to a pool noodle.

It is much denser foam and I think that will translate into better durability, better goop adhesion and a tighter fit. It was almost like slicing cheese, which also made the cutting (as Al said) very precise.

I also used the same fishfinder in my other kayak I just want to save some money for my lures instead of buying another FF!  :smt003 . I used pool noodle also but instead putting water directly inside the pool noodle, I put a ziplock inside then add water and then put the transducer in ....works great, no leakage!  :smt003

Were you using ultrasound gel at Davenport II?

Yep, I sure was Kirk. It's hanging upside down in the garage, and it *appears* that the gel may be staying in there. I'll let you know the next time I take it out. (not to mention 1 1/2 upside down on the car in transit)

As for on the water, it was fine - but I didn't notice any difference from using plain water.

Your way ahead of us Eric when you forget your sunscreen you can always dip a little from your noodle :smt004

Quick update. I have now been out twice, with 1.5 hr. yak upside down car rides and a week of upside down storage from the rafters in my garage, and the gel is still going strong. No leakage whatsoever, and have not had to add any to top it off.

By the way, I attribute part of this to the fact I used a foam kickboard instead of a pool noodle. I think the foam is sturdier and might hold the transducer in tighter.
