My reel suddenly went on the fritz.

The problem is that if there is any tension on the line, it will not pull in any line, and will instead make clicks with a feel like there is a gear "slipping" inside. It will also to this if you simply pull the line out (drag is not engaged, instead, it "slips" and clicks).

Free spool and the first turn disengaging free spool works fine.

It reels fine if there is not tenion on the line.

I have adjusted the all dials (drag, magnetic brake, backlash control etc), but nothing changes this.

Here is a blurry video with sound which shows what I mean.

I don't know how to overhaul a reel, but if it is something not too difficult, I'm happy to pull out the tools.

Any ideas?

sounds like a gear. I am guessing when you have tension on the line the gear has some torque on it and comes out of alignment. You may want to shoot Alan Tani an email with the video. He may be willing and able to walk you through it. Hopefully its a simple fix. If not, Alan should be able to fix it in person.

Good call - I'll do that.

By the way, not sure how I double posted the video, and cannot seem to get it to be just one.

Just copy the URL from YouTube and paste it in the message board. Nothing else needs to be done.

I'd be happy to check out your reel.  Its possible theres salt buildup somewhere and something is stuck.

it looks like the pinion gear is not engaging the spool shaft properly. there are a couple of reasons that the pinion gear could be hanging up.  pop out the spool and then flip the reel in and out of gear.  you should be able to see the pinion gear move in and out.  if it doesn't, try dropping a little oil in and around the pinion gear (and also on the spool shaft), put the spool back in and give it a try again.  can you let us know?  thanks!  alan

Alan, PM sent.

Going to cut my losses before Mooch moves the thread to "This Happened to Me".

I *think* all the bits are still there. :smt003

What sealed the deal for me was trying to take remove the crank as an assembly and the shims all slid apart. Not sure how important the order of them is, but I only had about a 50/50 shot getting them correct. You've got schematics, right???   :smt044

Ah, ok. I was using the youtube button above then pasting the "embed" URL in between.

Hey Marv - I somehow missed this the first time around! Thanks for the offer but I reckon I'll send it to Alan for a full workup (especially now that I've taken it apart and put it back together...twice...)
