Santa Cruz Pelican climbs aboard

Last month at the Santa Cruz kayak fishing tournament the sardines were schooling just outside the harbor.  There were boats and kayakers catching catching 2-3-4 at a time while the sea lions chased the school of sardines all around. It was frenzy above the water and below.  There too were a lot of pelicans around but all they did was follow the boats around waiting for handouts.  One of them followed me for a while when he saw that I was catching sardines.  I thought it would be cool if he climbed on my kayak and to my amazement he did. I took a few pictures of him before I had to shove him off the kayak.  The pelican had jumped on my lap trying to get at the sardines I had just hooked and I didn't want any hooks on my new friend.

Yakee,  My brothers and I had the same thing happen to us while fishing for sardines in the Half Moon Bay harbor. It was pretty cool and we were laughing at each other as they became quite aggressive at times.

While it does seem neat, I tend to think that wild animals should stay as such.
