Hey guys,

I do a lot of kayak fishing down here in southern cali.  I got referred to your site by a buddy of mine from some fishing forums down here.

I'm going to be doing some camping on the coast in Humbolt county in a couple weeks or so and am unfamiliar with the area.  Any campground suggestions, good places to launch?  I'm not even sure what kind of fish you guys have off your coast...  I've been referred to Big Lagoon.  Any info. would help.

Thanks,

Rob Hunter

Stay home, SoCal-Boy!   :smt002  JK, Bro!  Big Lagoon is a good destination - close to 101 and a cool spot to car camp with kayaks.  You can trout fish there and keep cutthroat I think - the native rainbow/steelies you'll catch must go back and bait often does them in, so be a sport and go artificial with barbless.  Another lagoon to the north, Freshwater Lagoon, has trout (used to get planted) and bass.  You can launch into the ocean at Trinidad Harbor and do pretty good for rockfish and maybe a lingcod not too far from port.  Those are my best tips.  Good luck.   :smt001

Stop at Eureka Fly Shop on Broadway in Eureka http://www.eurekaflyshop.com/

say hi to Mike, get some local intel on fishing. Ask about "the Jetty". He will have a Klamath river report. Big Lagoon is only to fish when there are no steelhead and salmon around in the Klamath, (WHICH THEY ARE NOW).

Bucksports on Broadway on the south end of town (Broadway is Hwy 101) always gives good free intel.

Clam Beach ( 7 1/2 miles north of Arcata (near McKinleyville) off HWY 101 (exit Clam Beach Park off-ramp) is my favorite place to fish and crab off shore. You can camp there for $12.

Camp out at Prairie Creek Redwoods state park (they have showers)or take the road out to the beach on Davison Road to Gold Bluff Beach campground and Fern Canyon which is, located 3 miles north of Orick off of Highway 101. 50 miles from Eureka and Crescent City, about 20 miles south of the mouth of the Klamath River. Tip: Park at Prarie Creek Pond and go down to beach there and fish. Check out the break first, they get big ass waves up there sometimes. You would not believe what i have caught from shore up there.

Most of those rockfish and Lings have never seen a hook. Bring some crab rings.

Another "secret", go to Ferndale ( south of Eureka) ask how to get to Ocean House ( it is Mattole Road). Feels like endless switchbacks, but once you get to the beach... ahhhhh. You have to pick your spot. Some of the land there is private. Be careful.  Lots o' fish, no people.
