You can catch very big fish on very small gear . That would be good for swim baits , small jigs .Good enough to catch rockies or a ling .Being new to this I am going cheap on the gear .I 'll leave the good stuff for the big boat .If you lose or break a cheap setup not a big deal . My 2 cents worth .

That looks awesome to me! I've got an even lighter combo that is fun as hell for rockies. With the added backbone in the Fenwick, you could handle some pretty big fish.
Just a walleye fisherman from MN tryin' ta get salty!

Thanks for the feedback! Ideally, I'm trying to outfit myself w/ 3-4 setups that will cover all my freshwater and inshore/bay fishing needs. Here are all of the species I can see myself going after:

  > trout
  > large/small mouth bass
  > bait fish
  > rock fish
  > lings
  > sturgeon
  > halibut
  > salmon (someday...)
  > sea bass
  > Albacore (on occasion)

Given the above, what fish do you think my SaltStik/Abu 5500 combo will cover, and what other rod & reel setups would you recommend to tackle the rest? I'm thinking a need a light weight spinning combo for the freshwater stuff and a heavier combo for the bigger guys (sturgeon, tuna) -- Maybe something like the following:

ROD -

Seeker "Black Steel" Tri-Glass Composite
Model: G 870-7'
Line Test: 15 (20) 25

REEL -

Daiwa Saltist STT30H
Action: FW/SW -/ML
Bearings: 2CRBB, 2BB, 1RB
Gear Ratio: 6.1:1
Line Per Handle Turn: 36.0"
Line Capacity (Lb.Test/Yards): 14/490, 20/295, 25/230
Drag Max: 15.4 lbs

Thanks again,
Jeff (a.k.a. Steelerhead)
