Just keep them facing away from your crotch.  :smt005  Joking aside you are more likely to get spined.

When I caught my 36" ling, the main thing I was worried about was would it fit in the net.  Once I got it in the net my son came over and borrowed my whacker and applied a few knocks which calmed everything down.  Then I put it in my lap for the application of the stringer  (definetely watching out for the TEETH)(then the hook removal).

I'm usually cautious around engergetic fish. Halibut & lings both could cut you badly with their teeth, but if they go "nuts" they can also get you with gaff hooks, lure hooks, or anythng they might knock into you. I've also had them leap over the side just as I was setting up for a surf landing (this creates a big drag on the yak, in the worst possible moment).

If I am going to keep a fish for the table it's "lights out" a.s.a.p. after getting it secure on the clip.

With practice over numerous encounters there will be no fear.  Once you have ahold of it and it senses no fear you will both be calm.  Also, if you intend to kill the fish it is much more likely to go apeshit.   :smt001

I was all worried about the same thing, but as long as you have a gaff or lipgripper device and some basic instruction you should be good to go.

Biggest for me was a 19.7lb ling that was a piece of cake.

A game clip helps tremendously, imo.

My sturgeon had me pretty freaked out, but once you see how the snare deal works it's no big deal, (thanks again, SBD!).
