I was feeling like a solo paddle was in order so I hit up Paradise for a beautiful day on the bay.

I hit up the bait shop first thing, then was paddling out by 0730. Dead calm with no wind, ripple, and almost no current at all. Within 5 minutes, on my way to start my drift, my clicker stars in with zzzz...zzz...ZZZZ! I feed a bit of line, wait a couple seconds and slowly reel up tight. The circle hook does its job and up comes a 25" butt. One of the filets is just about to go on the grill...  :smt007

At this point I'm thinking, "Well that was quick!" Unfortunately that was all the action for 3 more hours of drifting, trolling, and re-baiting. Finally after a long wait I get the zzzzz....zz..ZZZZZZZZZ! At this point what I should have done was feed it line and wait patiently for the fish to finish eating the huge herring I was using for bait. But, instead I got excited and reeled right away, the rod doubles over, this one is bigger than the last one, then POP! Up comes the head of a herring with my circle hook still in it. I think the herring was laughing at me, although I can't be sure.  :smt005

Overall it was a nice relaxing day, but none of the boats or the pier were doing any better than me. One point of interest though was that there were about 6 nuns on the pier, in their full habits, fishing for halibut. Sure do wish my camera worked.....

Nice job on the Hali.  Thanks for the report Jay.  Did you offer your catch to the nuns?  :smt003

Great solo mission Jay, congrats on the hali!!!

The tops of my wrists and arms seem to remember from grammar school that those nuns can be pretty nasty with a fish bonker type device.

Yep, the nuns fishing was kind of a weird thing to see. Something about a nun in the full habit casting a surf rod is a sight to see!  :smt059 :smt104

Also, I just ate the hali filet and I discovered a new recipe that I'll be trying again. I soaked the filet in Drakes Bay Mignonette Sauce for about 30 minutes, sprinkled chile powder over the top and squeezed a lime across it, then grilled it for about 6 minutes with a bit of mesquite smoke. This was the best hali recipe I have ever had.  :smt007

Sounds like a great day. Congrats on the hook up!!! That recipe sounds like the bomb. Nothing is more calming to me than sitting on my yak enjoying the weather and soaking some bait!! Thanks for the report!!
