I have the 36 and it is a great gun for low vis, I have never had a problem with it. I like the thicker shaft for hunting rockfish.  I am not as worried about bending it if I am shooting it into a hole or bounce it off of a rock.

If you are diving on a great day it can be too short but that is not very often.  I think the 24 is a little too short. Would make a great hole gun though.

I have a three band version (xhd) of that gun and love it.  Honestly though, if I were free diving for perch and small rockies only, I would consider looking on ebay and getting a small to medium length pneumatic.  Pole spears are fantastic, don't get me wrong, I have three of them, but they can be a pain to hold cocked all the time.   If you want to go out an just have fun, it's hard to beat a pneumatic.  I had one in college and there are times that I wish I still had it.  I never felt under powered with it, it was super easy to cock and the line is easier to manage because you are not dealing w/ bands.  You do lose some power at depth, but you won't notice much of a loss under 25'.  Plus, there are a ton of good guns on ebay for under 70 bucks or so, so you can't beat that value. They probably have a shorter life than traditional guns, but you'll have so much fun you won't care.  Just my two cents worth . . .

IMO The 24 is too small; no power. I have a Biller 32 that is responsible for the demise of numerous fish. Steve Crombie cut a 3rd goove in the shaft for me so it can use 3 bands (required for power as far as I'm concerned). I've been shooting 2 5/8  and 1 9/16 bands for several years with it (that's what would fit); the Biller 14" models. These may be the bands made for a 24". I've found that if I use the length bands Biller recommends, there is no power. This year I got their new 3/4" bands and I tried using those (in the recommended length). Bounced the shaft off a couple lings, so I shortened the bands to about 15" and it seems perfect. Haven't popped any lings on the skull (the perfect test) yet, but skewered a couple halibut from 4 or 5 feet.
I was told by someone at a dive shop that doing 3 bands on the Biller will wear out the trigger mechanism, but that was 8 or 9 years ago, and I'm still shooting fish with the gun.
A spear pole is fine for perch and rockfish, but when you shoot a 15# ling you may lose it; that's why I switched to a gun. And big halibut are hard to take with a pole; only Malibu 2 can do that.
Lastly $160 seems high for a Biller 24. Try Andy at Anderson's.

To clarify, I'm using 2 3/4 bands now. So you can take a stock Biller gun and turn it into a hard-hitter for the price of a couple of bands.
I'd love to get a Riffe #2 mid-handle, but they are $500-600 so too much WAF needed to pull that off.
