yep, lots have tried, bottom line: buy the wheeleez with the big balloon tires for a little under $200, you will not regret it. Hook1 has 'em for a fair price.....

Jaws,

If you intend to use it on a sandy beach jhfish is right, balloon tires are the only way to go (I'm waiting for mine to arrive as we speak). If you're just talking about hard surfaces I can post some pics and notes for my pvc cart which would work fine ... but it's a mother to drag through the sand.

My 2 cents...
If you are going to use the cart to move kayaks around near the car and will store it in the vehicle, go ahead and build one. Lots of PVC and tube carts built on here with all types of tires. I made one out of 2x4 lumber & lawnmower wheels.

IF you plan on using it in deep sand and/or stowing it in your hatch-you'll probably eventually purchase a beach wheel cart from wheeleze. The product is good, holds up well (now that the tire issue has been exposed & dealt with), the only downside is they are pricey. I'm on my 3rd cart in 15 years. I burned up the axle on one, now I've got the carcass of that cart for parts and I use two others one a sand cart and one is a standard. The sand wheels have bearings which really help. The standard wheels do not have bearings and so sand eats into the aluminum axle, eventually cutting through the tubing.

I've made a couple carts, definitely get the rolleze wheels. Dragging regular wheels on sand is harder than dragging the kayak with no wheels.

I'd stay away from pvc, I've seen tooo many blow up at the most inconvenient moment. I tried a design reinforced by dowels epoxied in the straight sections, but it broke at home rolling around the yard. You would have to use pipe so big it would be stupid heavy.

I welded up lightweight mild steel hardware store tubing and conduit into a 10lb. cart. I made up a design after looking at what was available, and easy to assemble.

I'll try and take some pics later and post them. It comes apart to stow in a yak, but I usually leave it on shore somewhere.

Made one = fail. Bought a cheeper one = fail. Got the wheelez.....HOME RUN. Save your frustration and save up for the caddy of carts.

I know it seems like a lot of scratch....but its so worth it. The first time you roll past someone with the 'other' wheels you see it money well spent :smt002
