here ya go....

35410.  The load upon any motor vehicle alone or an independent load only upon a trailer or semitrailer shall not extend to the rear beyond the last point of support for a greater distance than that equal to two-thirds of the length of the wheelbase of the vehicle carrying such load, except that the wheelbase of a semitrailer shall be considered as the distance between the rearmost axle of the towing vehicle and the rearmost axle of the semitrailer.

I use one the the trailer hitch 'T' bars to my 8 foot bed actually plus the distance the T sticks out only has about 4 feet of yak sticking out. I have a flag as well

To be safe, put a flag on it if past 4 feet.  When I carry mine and my buddies in the back of the van, I throw a flag on it just to be safe.  Sometimes that might be the only thing flapping around to draw attention of those id--t drivers behind you.  Definetly better safe than a short yak.

You need a red light at night, too.

If I am not mistaken, 5 feet over your truck bed you need a flag attach to your
kayak.

I stuck reflective stickers to the bow and Stearn of my yak.

I meant you need a red flag on your protruding yak during the day, and a red light on it at night...  if it's sticking out of your pickup bed.
