Well i think if finally got  down with my polespear. i have been expermenting over the last couple of years to get a polespear both with impact power and reach and holding power.
The final results are.....a band of speargun rubber, which i picked up at the FT bragg dive shop in a roll for replacement of worn speargun rubbers. A paralyzer tip with barbs and a rubber band halfway down the tip to bring the three points in closer together.  The rubber band i used was one that you would find on a bunch of asspargus, small and thick. i made it 3 times smaller by folding it over the tip. When i hit a fish with this rig the rubber band moves down the tip spreading the tip out after impact. Not one fish moved anything today when hit with this rig.
the only fish i lost was a 4 lb black and when i check the rubber band was pushed all the way down the tip, so it hand no impact. After that i made sure the rubber band was pushed up halfway after each fish.
the speargun rubber really pushed the tines through the fish, although no lings today i get i could really do a number with this setup.

Hope this helps  :smt001

I do the same thing with rubber "O" rings I buy at Home Depot or Lowe's.

Definitely seems to concentrate the initial impact and control the spread of the tines. Works well with my  3-tine and my 5-tine pole spears.

I make my own pole spears from fiberglass.  I use 12' sections of SS tubing that will sleeve over the fiberglass.  I place the tines in one end and fix them in place with molten dead 6" up the tube and one everything is cooled I epoxy the resulting tip to the fiberglass main shaft.  Works well.....CHEAP!!

I found inexpensive fiberglass rods at a fence supply. They are used as stiffeners on wire fencing and are only a few dollars each.

Can you post pics? Sounds like an interesting setup.

I use surgical tubing for the band, with a paralyzer tip, although I've never heard of putting a rubber band to bring the points closer together.

Be careful going after lings. Part of what I've learned with using a polespear for a number of years is that many fish are out of range or too big, and the worst feeling (for me anyway) is going home knowing that I may have needlessly killed a nice fish. I like to keep my shot/kill ratio at 1:1.

I will have to post pics from another computer, mine died and this is a really old laptop without a disk drive to load software.
The trick for lings is that as soon as you let go of your polespear you follow it and pin the ling to the bottom. Then you either grab its gills or, i prefer to slide my hand down the polespear shaft and grab the tines coming out the other side, pushing the ling up the spear.
Try the speargun rubber for you band, its the most powerful band i have found yet.

Yeah, that's what I do for any fish I spear, but lings are just so strong, and often are in a position where there's nothing behind them to pin them, or just at a weird angle.

Spear gun bands are VERY difficult to stretch and then maintain that stretch while chasing a fish, at least in my opinion.

If i cant get a good shot on a ling i let it go. If i cant get within a few inches of a ling from my tip i also let it go. Lings are great fried but we dont fry anything here so i give them away when i get them, so its no big deal for me to shoot a ling.

I started lifting weights and increased my entire body strength many times over. I can now dive without a rest for 3+ hours and have no trouble pulling a speargun band all day long. My increased strength also makes it much eaiser to pin a ling and as a side benefit my wife loves my body! :smt002

Lings are great any way you cook them! Try broiling or pan-searing before you give one away, or give it to me next time!

Rockfish bake and broil so much better then a ling, i can choose the fish i hunt and we like the black and yellows gophers and chinas then blacks and blues. The striped perch are also great baked and all of the above make a great sweet and sour fish dish that is fat free.
Now when the wife takes off on a business trip and its a pig out deep fried ling is hard to beat. but thats only a couple of meals a year.
I have the luxury to live 45 miles from mendo and can dive anytime the ocean is calm enough, so i can be picky.
Tommorrow is a crab dive, fresh duginess for dinner :smt002

I am a newbie. So sorry if this is a dumb question. But how do you attach the power band to the back end of the shaft?
