I want to learn how to ocean fish in a kayak.  I have over 40 years deep sea fishing in the LA/San Diego area.  I am a serious open party boat fisherman.  Now is the time for me to get serious about kayak fishing.  I will begin to purchase used kayak equipment to get started. But I need a tutor or mentor to get started.

Jim I would just cruise the old posts on this site there is very little that hasn't been discussed here, post up specific questions or use the search feature, take a class from scallen or SBD, get all your gear. Then join a hook up in a mellow area like Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay buddy up with someone your first trip or two.

Welcome to ...the MadNess! :smt044

If you've not had much paddling experience do yourself a favor and take an intro to kayaking class. Even a basic Sit-On-Top kayaking class will should cover basic paddle strokes, rescues, equipment, and kayak etiquette. With a little forethought you'll be able to test-paddle some different kayaks at the same time.

It sounds like you've got plenty of fishing experience, so really kayaking is all you need. When you get a kayak, take time to play around on it without fishing. The confidence learned from this will go far in making your kayak fishing days much more enjoyable.
