With all of Mooch's SUP posts lately and the fun where having discussing the OK Torque and it's trolling motor, I thought I would mention the other new "boat" from Ocean Kayak.

It's a rotomolded SUP board that you can also sit down on and paddle like a kayak.  Carlise is making a hybrid paddle to use with it that converts from SUP paddle to kayak paddle.

Here's the press release..

OCEAN KAYAK™ DEBUTS NEW NALU™ PADDLEBOARD
Ferndale, WA (June 18, 2009) Ocean Kayak, a pioneer in paddlesports industry for over 35
years, today introduced the Nalu, the brand’s first-ever paddleboard. A hybrid paddleboard that
can be paddled from both standing and seated positions the Nalu offers versatility, performance
and fun at an affordable price.
One of the industries only rotomolded polyethylene paddleboards the Ocean Kayak Nalu is
durable, stable and excels in mild surf. Extremely user friendly, the Nalu features dedicated
areas for sitting and/or standing and is the first paddleboard on the market that will accommodate
a backrest.
“We feel the Nalu hits a sweet spot in the paddleboard market by offering peak performance at a
price that breaks down barriers of entry into the sport,” said Sara Knies, Senior Brand Manager
for Johnson Outdoors. “The added versatility of paddling while standing or seated is a great
benefit to the consumer as well and a great selling point for our dealers,” concludes Knies.
Eleven feet long and thirty-one inches wide, the Nalu includes molded-in fins for outstanding
tracking, two self-draining scuppers, a storage bungee, ergonomic carry handles and can be
complimented with the new Carlisle Taboo hybrid paddle. This unique paddle allows the user to
convert the paddle from a stand up paddle to a 230cm kayak paddle depending on whether
they’re paddling the Nalu from a standing or seated position.
The Nalu will be available this summer at authorized Ocean Kayak dealers throughout the
United States and Canada. For more information about the Nalu and the Ocean Kayak brand
please visit www.oceankayak.com.

I kinda like the idea. I am worried that it will miss the performance mark of both yak and SUP. I would love to demo it. Mooch, let us know if/when you get some in at Aquan

I think that's wicked cool and I'd love to try one.

The simplicity of SUP's is very appealing to me, and the versatility of that boat sounds like a bonus.  Who wants to stand up all day?

How is creating a hybrid or motorized kayak for that matter a method of paddle sport alienation?   Last I knew Johnson Outdoors makes all sorts of SOT and decked kayaks (Necky and Old Town lines) as well as Canoes (Old Town).  They also own Extrasport (PFDs) and Carlisle and Lendal paddles.

They do confuse things a bit though with these new offerings.

That looks interesting.
About the only things that might put me off of one would be it doesn't look like you'd be able to shift your foot placement much, but maybe if you are just paddling you might not need to...surfing it, I don't know...
...the other thing is that what attracts me to SUP's is the sweet surfboard construction. The rotomolded plastic just doesn't look as cool.

Still, I could see paddling that thing being pretty fun.
