I am heading to my inlaws in Southern California in a few weeks and will be fishing Silverwood Lake with my brother inlaw and would like to show him up. We have been talking smack to each other for a while now about our fishing skills and are wagering a friendly bet to see who can catch the biggest striper from this lake. He will be on his boat and me in my kayak of course. Has anyone fished this lake and do you have any good advice for me? I have been searching for fishing reports for this lake and haven't found much. Looking for an edge to hopefully gain bragging rights.

Thanks in advance,
Ray

Fished it in early mid 80's. Go big or go home if you want to win. Big swim baits w/scent. A friend used BIG chunk Baits Mackeral Herring ect

Thanks guys, I will be trolling big swim baits w/scent as suggested and probably soaking some bait as well. I am sure it is going to be a blast no matter what the outcome is, but bragging rights for the kayak fisherman would be nice.

I grew up in SoCal and have fished and camped there.  check out http://fishingnetwork.net/ if you haven't already.

"Morning Wood" is the key.

Chucking the big wooden swimbaits early early in the AM, or later in the day, used to produce.  Otherwise you'll have to switch to dropshots or dunking bait at depth.  I dont recall the live bait situation.  It gets super hot down there so watch your hydration and sun exposure.

I also used to fish trout there.  Don't know if they stocked this year, and the stocks have def stopped this late in the season.  By now, DFG may have switched to cats if anything.

Last campsite we stayed at was very nice, but that was years ago.

Thanks yakuza,

I did happen upon that website and it looks like the bite is definitely better in the morning. I do plan on fishing early and yes it does get super hot down there. We typically spend time at the inlaws late June and early July and it is not unheard of that the temperatures reach 116 Deg. F. It is almost like hitting a wall when you walk outside after being in cool house. I haven't heard anything about the trout stock there. I think my brother inlaw wants to just target stripers.

Thanks again,
Ray
