Went out with my neighbor on Sunday to King Island for some bass fishing PB style.  Gary is a semi-pro tournament fisherman and hits the delta almost every weekend (for the last 20 years!) and thinks my kayak fishing looks fun, but he likes to put up numbers, so we fished his style...

Launched at 5:00 and saw Hobie on the water already, chasing down the elusive 10's.  So we said hi and hit the gas!

There were apparently over 250 tournament boats on the water yesterday!  The fishing was tough and we covered a lot of water, but here's what I learned:

there is quite a bit of $$ on the amateur circuit.
tournament bass fisherman MOVE ALL THE TIME, we were never off the motors, either hauling a$$ to another spot, or trolling fast
tournament fishermen throw reaction baits ALOT
there is much more to see in the water from 7 feet than 3 feet up (eye level)
According to Gary, many spots hold alot of small fish, but few spots are consistent for big fish.
many more areas look like they should have fish, but he has never had luck there...

Well, that's the report.  Off the water at 1:00 with 3 for me and 5 for Gary, almost all on topwater.  I was happy to have the big fish of the day at just under 4 lbs :)

I now have a list of spots to check out with the yak, and some launch points to try and find

Sorry, no pics, we were moving so fast I felt guilty every time I took a minute to change lures!  No wonder those guys carry 6-10 rods...  I know Gary had 8 strapped to the deck and he was constantly switching...

Good thing you got all the good spots that you could yak fishing in the future  :smt003  Those tournament guys take fishing too serious and forgot the joy of being OTW.

Way to soak up what you could during the blur. Those tournament guys could probably learn a few things from Hobieblue. Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report...it was good to see you out there yesterday.  I ended up with 7 fish, up to 3 pounds.  It was a tough bite for sure.
