i fish out of a dirigo 140, which is a sit in. It handles rough water quite well. just know this it is a lot harder to get back into after a capsize. be prepared to be in the water longer than you would be with a sit on. and never take a sit in out without a float bag in it. in my i have a large dry hatch in the stern and then in the bow i have a large float bag installed i also took small pool noodles and cut them in half and put them in the space under the sides with all this even if my boat tips, swamps whatever it still floats very well allowing me to grab my bilge shed some water and get back in. also with any kayak but for sure if you use a sit in you need to find a nice calm bay or lake and practice all this.

You  can begin kayak fishing with a SIK, but it has definite disadvantages. I'll start with the assumption that you have the safety element covered. You have an effective roll and can get back in if that fails.

Now put a rod in your hands, and one in a rod holder on the boat. You have a gaff, a stringer of fish, a small tacklebox, and a fishfinder somewhere in or on your boat. Now your whole self rescue process gets pretty inconvenient, to say the least. You may lose some gear.

My advice is to begin fishing from your yak in calm conditions with minimal gear. If you really catch the bug, you're gonna want a boat more suited to fishing, a SOT.

Welcome!

Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

JFISH-The word "Kayak" is an inuit term for "Hunters boat" The arctic native fished and hunted from SIK's for a good ten thousand + years. If you went back in time and brought them a totally tricked out modern day SOT it would likely be laughed at and used for children near shore. That said, I'm partial to the SOT for fishing for all the reasons mentioned in this post. This first pic i'm posting is of my bro fishing a good 8 miles offshore but right next too Isla de Todos Santos in Baja. An SOT would have issues going that far out in open water and back with the constant threat of sudden Baja winds. The 2nd pic is 4 miles offshore in the sea of Cortez, doable by SOT standards but not common. My point is that most Kayak anglers stick close to shore and for offshore kayak fishing SIK may be better. Inflatable sponsons would add stability if needed.

Some of my childhood buddies were notorious for delayed response during conversations. They just sit there with a fixed stare at something and not say anything to me and 10 minutes later.... boom.... a calm response followed by brief laughter. Strange buddies of mine. They usually feel an urge to munch on food not too long afterwards.  :cook :smt033 :smoke
I wouldn't go so far as to call a lingcod filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a lingcod's got personality. Personality goes a long way.
