I caught stripers in the Russian too.  I fished down below Duncan Mills off of Freeze Out Rd. in April and May when the shad were coming up. I think they're still around just depends on a good shad run. I used a white bucktail with a white worm trailer. I went down there this April and the spot I use to fish was all posted with keep out signs. I've also seen sturgeon caught in the lower river.
I also have caught stripers in the East Branch Russian above Lake Mendocino while fly fishing for trout. Its a small stream but when DFG plants trout in there stripers come up from Mendo and can be quite aways up that creek. A six pound striper on a 4wt is alot of fun.
  Tight lines Dale
