Hi all,

Just a quick report on first hand observations on the Sonoma coast today. Drove out to the coast this morning just below Jenner to jump in and look for a GIANT abalone. Ocean was friendly and  flat, with a slight north westerly breeze. This plankton bloom they have been speaking of is Still around. Water was dirty with about 1-2' of visibility. Drove all the way down to Bodega Bay and checked some other spots along the way and the vis varied from locale to locale. Around Porutguese Beach it cleared up to about 4' ish. Bailed on the dive but enjoyed the recon and being near the water.   Looks like the ocean is going to stay decent for the next bit. Hope  you all get to go out and get after it; abs, lingzillas, or whatever you are hunting and gathering. Stay safe all,

Shannon

Thanks for the report. I check the Salt Point Park Ocean Conditions webpage everyday hoping the "bloom" will abate before July hits. Just got my new fins, mask, and snorkel and I wanna try em out. But it's not fun diving with crap vis and i'm 1/3 done on my card so i'll wait a little and see if it clears. jim

Thanks for the report Shannon. I am still hoping to make it to Ft Ross this Saturday.
I am so looking forward to my first ab dive. Don't worry, I will stay within my
confort zone.

Take care bro,

Don't worry Jed. You need vis for spearing fish. You don't need it for abs.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

Wow, you're the master then!  Can you share the technique? :smt003

Sonny you know when they say there is no vis you can still see for a couple of feet on the bottom. Am I going to have the honor of diving with you?

When the water is clear you can count on your dive depth to increase by double. Clear water just makes it more fun and the level goes way up. Diving dirty can be done but it aint fun. And if you are new it can be a real bummer. I have dove in water so dirty that at 20ft the lights just went out. Thats a wierd feeling. Like closing the closet door in a lit room. Gerstle cove is not always a good place to make a determination of viz conditions.  It can be 1 ft of viz in the cove and then go up to 15ft on the outside.
