Whoa! That barnacle ab is gnarly. Looks medieval. Tie it to a stick and beat a poacher/heretic. :smt064

So how do I know when it is neutralized? Do I need to measure the PH? If so, how do I do that?

If you have an easy way to measure pH, do it and anything over 3 should be good to dump down the sink at home with a little water flush.

I still think dumping in couple old shells and leaving it overnight will do it.

As the Hydrochloric Acid eats away at the Calcium Carbonate of the shell it is neutralizing itself. So if you put enough shell (calcium carbonate) in, it will completely neutralize the acid. Should be OK as soon as bubbles stop forming on the shell. If the shell dissolves completely, then it's not neutralized and needs another shell.

I'm thinking unless you're really efficient at getting rid of shells you probably have a few laying around.

Have fun and be careful with the fresh acid. Believe the warnings on the bottle..

And then I can pour it down a sewer drain?
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Yep, once it's neutralized it's OK to pour into the sewer, it may be a little smelly from some of the organic matter you digested in the acid, so just flush it down with a little rinse.

Muriatic acid = Hydrochloric Acid, which is the same acid that the lining of your stomach makes to digest your food, and you know how that can smell.

Muriatic acid is also being used in the swimming pools to lower total alkalinity.
