Looks like I may be able to get out on Thursday and Friday.  I was thinking about MBK on Thursday and the cement ship on Friday.  Does anyone know where the best place to launch is to fish the cement ship?
Thanks

Launch from New Brighton State Beach or if the surf is small enough Seacliff State Beach. You could also launch north of the Capitola pier and paddle/fish your way south.

New Brighton is usually pretty calm. You just have to pay to park. Oh and you'll need/want wheels to get to the beach

They do, but it depends on when you launch. I've seen the lifeguards turn away a kayaker who was trying to launch around noon on a Saturday, when the beach and water was full of kids.  :smt011 But, I haven't had a problem launching early in the morning.

You do have to pay for parking, and the parking booth doesn't open until 8am. But, the parking lot isn't gated, so you can get in and get your choice of spots if you get there early. If you do that, I think they leave a "reminder" to pay on you way out, but I have an annual parks pass, so it's a nonissue for me.

If you do hit Seacliff, turn right at the bottom of the hill, and then park in the lot right next to the restrooms (before you hit the RV section). There's a very short staircase and then a short drag to the water.

New Brighton, incidentally, is gated before 8am. Good luck! :thumright:

I usually go out early, so I launch from Capitola and fish my way towards new brighton/Seacliff.

Why would you pay for parking at Seacliff when you can park free at Rio Del Mar?

You can also launch right off the Capitola wharf. Just drive to the end of the wharf and carry your yak down the boat ramp steps and put it in the water. It does help if someone else is there to help carry down the kayak. I have done it with the wheels on my yak. It is a short paddle to the area you want to fish. I'm going to go out Friday and would be glade to fish with you. I'm still dreaming about that big fatty. But I still have to pay my dues as I'm pretty new to this kayak thing. You still have to pay to park at any of the metered parking spots as the wharf will not let you keep your car there while you fish.

you can also drive up the hill across the street in the residential neighborhood across from Shadowbrook restaurant.  All day parking, no meter.  It is a walk, but if your gonna be there all day, might as well avoid the meter maid

that is a very long walk and takes a lot of faith that no one will steal your equipment.  much better with two people.

i have done the walk plenty of times and have not had any problems. I leave the minimum gear on the yak on the beach and carry the essentials like a dry bag, poles and such down from the car. It takes about 5 minutes to do the trek. So who's going on Friday, I might be down.  Mike

I have also made the at capitola walk and it's not bad at all.

Just leave the yak on the beach, park the truck, and walk back down with remaining gear. It is easier with someone to watch the boat, but I have never had a problem while alone either.

I don't mess with the launch at the end of the wharf, I launch off the sand right next to the wharf where there is a slope to negotiate to get there, wheeleze is a plus.

super easy trip to the cement ship with a wide sandy area all the way there for halibut, or fish the kelp.
