Yesterday 5/23: I got on the water at about 9:30. It was cold and overcast just like today and the 3 previous days here. There where probably 30 boats in the Capitola reef area (sickening). There was no bait to be seen. At around 11am a large flock of birds came around pleasure point and into Capitola but they just gave me a moment of false hope. The wind started blowing pretty good making conditions very unpleasant.  I got no action except for some small various shallow water rock species. All in all i was cold and miserable.

I talked to a lot of boats. Most had no luck except for small rockies. I heard second hand here and there stories of halibut being caught but didn't see any taken. Sounded like half of what was caught was undersized and the other half was barley legal. Definitely not at all like last week.

Today 5/24: I looked at the water from the cliffs. Maybe 20 boats in the same spot today at 9am. Conditions look similar (cold and miserable with no bait..) I wont be going out.

Nathan and I went out for halis from New Brighton Beach 5/23, and
joined a zillion PBs, rafts, canoes, kayaks etc and had not even a
bite.  Saw one small one landed.  That makes me 0-6.
one guy had us going for a while till he brought up a big ray.
fished dead squid, anchovies, swimbaits, and a hair-raiser.  Fished as
shallow as 6 feet out to about 25 FOW.  NB actually had a bit of a
shore dump.  Small but not the usual lake like setting.

Yeah, sorry to hear the same news as on the radio yesterday Eugene.

I was out by the wharf. bith sides, We hit the edge of the kelp HARD with whole squids and fishtraps, for nada.

One skiff i talked to said they got a halibut.  they were anchored up on the edge of the kelp...

Met Steve from aptos out on his big game.  Great guy, fully loaded on the yak, he has had some luck lately i this area.

I think the water is a bit cooler, and definitley dirty- no good for the flatties.

Same deal out of SC harbor today. Too windy and choppy to fish the kelp, even at 9 AM. Drifted for halibut for a while, but nada. Didn't see any bait balls or bird action. It was kinda cold, too. Looking forward to summer conditions.
