I don't have a pic of the lure, but it was pretty simple: a 2 oz lead head with a brown and white hoochie stretched over it and a rootbeer scampi threaded on the hook.  :smt023

I was letting the wind push me along as I just let the lure drag through the sand and bounce with the wave action. I had one more "grab" later in the day, but I was too slow on the hookset.

J, i was admiring your handywork on that rod while sipping vodka coolers in the lee of the cliff. when i landed I saw a large sand crab which had been chewed on by something that immediately reminded me  of your Jig wrt shape size and color

Thanks for the "atta-boys" guys!  :smt006
I'll tell you though, I had Parrothead fishing right next to me on the same drift with the same lure but we weren't able to get her hooked up on a hali. As much as I'm glad I've been back into the halis this week, I really want to put her on some fish. I built her that rod about two years ago and she's never caught a fish with it, although she's just recently started consistently fishing. Maybe this weekend will finally be the day she catches her first ever halibut. She's only caught two fish from a yak so far, a crappie and a decent LMB, so her first hali should be quite the adventure for her!  :smt008

I think the pink rod is waiting for a nice fat pink gopher rockfish. Get out in the kelp Theresa, you're bound to christen it there!

Great report guys and gal.  Way to go on the hal Jay!  Artificials are a blast when one hits it.

My only thing I can say for Theresa is do all the things it takes to catch a halibut and dont stress or want it to bad.  Main thing is being in the right place at the right time, you guys know that there are many different rigs and techniques for those halibut.

Stick to one live bait rig and one trolling rig that works and it eventually pays off.  There is definitely luck factored in to catchin 'em at times when there are only a few around.

As many halibut as you caught last year Jay, I'm sure Theresa has pretty good odds. :smt002

Great pics! They loaded up quickly, too. I'm on dial-up so I don't get to see all the pics posted here. Thanks for the small file size!
As for the crabs, were there many soft ones?

mako1, the crabs werent soft, but they were a tad "dirty" ( ie barnicles). they still tasted great...very sweet. just got back from feasting on em with family and friends. they were all just size, and i had to throw back 5 for every keeper. I think next season will open with a bang.

Sharky I think that bamboo gaff is mine. Is the head wrapped with yellow cord and coated with epoxy? Also the handle section is made from tapered bamboo that is fatter toward the grip portion.

If you need a gaff you can keep it but if you already have one I would love to get it back.

Thanks,
