There is a reward for a drift shoot! Anyone want to go paddling out to look for it? I'll use a spotting scope on the shore to help scout  :smt007
Check out the link.

How does a GW relieve a boat of its drift shoot. I'm having visions of Jaws chewing through the lines. People sure have been seeing lots of Old Whitey lately. I think I'll stick to hunting and trout trolling in the Fall :smt002
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

funny...cause Allen Bushnell told me about this incident.....but it was an 18 ft. GW and not a 20 footer. That shark seems to be getting bigger and bigger on every report.

...regardless, it's still a big shark. I wonder what color the drift chute was?

How does a shark remove a drift chute?  I'd love to hear any details that might exist on this one...

Oh crap... just as I was getting comfortable using my drift chute at places like Davenport..... we now here of GW's munching on chutes.  To make matters worse, mine is black and I can imagine Jaws mistaking it for a baby seal.

I have two quick release methods for ejecting my chute in an emergency, but I wonder if it would work with a GW doing a grab and run.    Talk about a sleigh ride!!! :smt087

I read a study by researchers testing shark's reactions to color, shape, and other attributes in order to determine the best protection mechanisms for shipwreck survivors and downed pilots. The sharks aggressively attacked Mango Yellow life vests so often, the researchers dubbed the color 'Yum Yum Yellow' with a bit of gallow's humor. I still wear it because it is very visible to boats and SAR personnel.

Actually, this report is a separate, later report than the one I told Mooch about.  That one was from a couple weeks ago, again the shark was nosing around the drift chutes of a couple boats off Davenport.

Sean VS from PSRF has already tagged a  number of GWs at Ano so far this year.  It's an early year for them around here, usually it's November, this year it was October and even a couple few random sightings in September as far South as the cement ship!!!???!!!

Ed at Capitola Boat and Bait has a great picture of a halibut that local Dan Williams literally pulled out of the mouth of a small (15ft) GW at Davenport about a month ago.  You can totally see the curve of the jaws on both sides of the fish.

On a related note, I'm sponsoring the annual PSRF lecture/video/slide show agin this year at UCSC, Merrill College Cultural Center at 8pm on October 27th.

"WHITE SHARKS AND  APEX PREDATORS OF
MONTEREY BAY    ~Sharks You Should Know~"

All are welcome to attend and it's free.  Great videos and a great talk from a local guy that has tagged more GW's than anyone else in the Western hemisphere!!

I'll post more on that event later, as the date drews close.  MJore info at www.pelagic.org

BTW, I haven't paddled out at Davenport since early September.............

For you shark experts, has anybody done a study with these black and white markings:

http://surfing.about.com/cs/productreviews/fr/042804camo.htm?iam=metaresults&terms=chance+triangle+sessions

What if you painted the bottom of your surfboard black and white like an Orca. Sharks are supposed to hate Orcas right. I read an article about a white hulled kayak with a black stripe down the center being left alone while an all white hulled kayak got bumbed repeatedly on the same trip.
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....
