Hey folks,

I'll be doing a little getaway with family the first week of July. I'll probably get out on a Panga at least one day, though this is not primarily a fishing trip. I'm thinking of taking a spinning rig along, and casting Crocodiles from the beaches in the morning. I'm thinking I may hook a rooster, or Sierra. Anyone have any thoughts on other techniques, or other artificials? This will be a sideline to the trip as a whole, so I have to keep it simple- a handfull of lures.

Your ideas appreciated.

Best,

TallPaul

Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

Now don't do like I did...Cabo San Lucas 06 brought my floattub, couple fly rds...kitchen freaking sink :smt009 135 lbs of fish gear...don't know what i was thinking.... :smt004  packing and dragging a dragging and packing....

time share Cabo vias...right on the beach north of the marina...nite...boats had lights in the water to catch bait fish, I'm tossing a wooly bugger, and I'm tagging smaller fish, lots of different kinds...nothing big...next day guy says weren't you worried bout sharks...75-100yards off beach drops straight down 2500 ft, I thought it was a coral reef...got the hebejebies....didn't repeat the nite trip...oh and i should of had some king of light because a jet ski comes ripping up on me and vears off at the last minute...I yelled at the guy and he said he thought i was a pelican....yeah right...All though that's the brand of Yak i own...I think he thought i was trying to steal his boat... :smt005

But one thing I've learnt from going there twice is its a gritty little town, and ya best watch your back...the whole place is corrupt...

I Did go out on a panga and caught a darodo...take your catch to the "Red Light restaurant" they will cook it up for like 5 bucks a side... :smt007

and July the marlins are in...I did a winter trip...

It was mostly a low budget "party trip" :smt004

Paul, I used to have a timeshare between Cabo and San Jose. Bring a surf rod (10 ft) if you can and rubber swimbaits. I caught many leopard groupers right in the boiler rocks. good luck and remember= July= Sunscreen

  Hey tallpaul
I love fishing the beaches down there, two tips go as early in the morning as you can and don't forget to turn and cast parallel to the beach. On the Cortez side the soft shore break digs a trough 2' or 3' from shore and the roosters chase bait up and down that trough. Roosterfish are difficult to catch on lures. You might try using a Sabik rig to catch live bait. I've had good luck using a mullet or small jack for bait and lobbing it out as far as you can, without killing it, and then slow trolling it by slowly walking down the beach. Lots of fish to be caught on the crock ladyfish, jack caravel, green jacks, pompano, needlefish and then there's pargo, cabilla, and grouper in the rocks. Also after the sun goes down the fish move tight to the beach. You'll have a great time.

A trip in July means plenty of sunscreen and ICE cold beer.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

paul,

if you fish like you might fish for surfperch (but not just motor oil grubs) or striped bass in the surf, you should catch something.

In my opinion, the best fishing is at least 1 hours driving up either the sea of cortez side OR the pacific side.

In the past I tossed 1.5oz krocs and it was expensive and kinda slow that way, but it does work (and the fish you do catch are often quality)

If I go again I would like to try to fish with sliding sinkers and 2" grubs rather than the crocs. maybe even two grubs, one on a dropper loop.  or lighter line and smaller spoons.
