Anyone know of a saltwater reel with the following characteristics:

  • two speed reel for high speed retrieve and low speed for winching
  • level wind
  • available as a lefty
  • smaller sized like an Avet MX or SX

Looking to do a long range trip or even a baja trip and building my arsenal.

It sounds like you're especially interested in finding the level wind feature. I've been told that it's not practical for the long range trips, as it is another moving part that could easily jam during a full sprint by a yellowtail, dorado, or tuna. There are already enough problems with knots coming undone due to high pressure, bit-through lines, and "fatigued" lines that break under stress.

I think finding a level wind and two speed will be a real challenge. Esp that small

I'm not even certain anybody makes a levelwind 2 speed reel.

I haven't seen one.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

I  have had bad experiences with levelwinds in baja, in particular Shimano Tekotas.  However when fishing two lines reeling in line #2 when there is a fish on line #1 is a lot easier with a level wind.  While its not a 2 speed (which is probably not that useful on a yak) I definitely want to get one (or three :smt003) of these...

I absolutely love my Inshores, the idea of a grande Inshore is VERY appealing.

Yep. That baby will be my next purchase. I just need one of my others to 'die' first.

I'm picking up a Toro 60 today or tomorrow. I asked about it in another thread, but I guess nobody has had any experience with it yet. Supposedly has 22lbs of drag.

I'll post a review of it after GSIII.

Hey Elric, are you back in CA now?

We need to hook up, bro.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Thanks,

I've been looking at those Revos as well. I guess asking for a 2 speed would be asking alot. I saw a version called The Winch, anyone know about these? If you were trolling, wouldn't a lower gear ratio be better for 'winching' in those fish, rather than high speed?

You need the higher gear for retrieving your lure/bait, when the boat starts moving to another spot and/or when you have a fish on the line and it's coming to you faster than you can wind in at the low gear.

I primarily fish braid and enjoy the ease of use that a levelwind affords. Get lazy or sloppy laying that braid and your line can dig into the spool.

I would get a 50...it has PLENTY of line capacity.  The winch is small, its a regular sized Revo.  The reason I don't see the need for a 2 speed on a yak is if your pulling that hard, you will move the boat before you move the fish...BTDT.  Once you get in a vertical "tuna circle" mode on a yak, gear ratio will not ge your limiting factor, leverage will be your problem.  BTDT as well.

While pretty much everything Blue Water Jon does is beyond idiotic, his short rod is a great way to go if your hoping to woop on tuna etc.
