Finally decided it was time to head up the coast last Saturday. I was convinced the vis was gonna be terrible but my pops insisted we give it a try. Left the boat at home so i could dive with my dad and cruised the g/f's Toyota echo(41 mpg) instead of the GMC(13 mpg). My brothers followed in the yota and we left Vallejo around 0530. Got in the water about 0830 and conditions were choice. 10-12 feet of visibility, small rollers no more than 1-2 feet, some surge but it could be avoided. my dad is 61 and is on his second year of ab diving. I put him on to one right away in 3 ft of water and then another 8" in 7 ft. I started seeing lots of fish so I ditched my ab iron and switched to the JBL 38 woody. The abs weren't going anywhere.

I am a relative noob to Ocean fishing and spearfishing. I started seeing greenling everywhere. Never shot or ate one before so I started head shooting them left and right. I nailed one in the dome and heard my brother laughing his a$$ off through his snorkel. He had watched the entire l saw an undersize cabbi, chased a decent size ling around but could never get a clear shot. I have been missing eating fresh seafood so I loaded up. 3 abalone, 2 greenling, 1 rock crab, 1 urchin, and a pile of young mussels.

The day was a blast, the water felt great, and diving with my family was awesome. Next night I beer steamed the mussels and rock crab claws, made an uni rissoto, and baked the greenling in olive oile and lemon. It all came out great but the greenie was kinda strong, needed a lotta lemon.

I gotta get some scuba gear soon...

Looks like an awesome outing, I'm dying to get in the water but life just keeps getting in the way, glad to see someone out having a good time.  And you don't see Liberator X tens very often anymore, I still love mine...

Awesome haul...how big were the abs?
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Great report and pics, WW - family times are the Best of Times.  Those are some good size greenling.  They're a very delicate fish and don't always turn out - I like 'em deep fried in little strips.   :smt007

Love the pictures of the harvest. Drooling over the abs. I have not been able to locate a store with the report cards. They've all sold out. =(

I just got one at Ace hardware in Sebastopol.  If you're coming up here, you could get one on the way to the coast.  I'd call first though.

Thanks for the props fellas. I am definatly gonna consider cajun frying the greenling next time. The abs were bout 8".The vis was choice so I wanted to spear fish more than anything. I also wanted to relax. I didn't go deeper than 15'. I can hit 25-30' but it take a lot out of me and can be dangerous.

More reports on the way, we are considering going again this Sat.
