Well it has been a while for me, but I was able to get on the water last Friday with my brother for some yak time. I have been gearing up for this upcoming rockfish season and wanted to try out a few things. We launched at the Pittsburg launch ramp around 8:30 AM. The wind was building but we were determined to have a good time.

I had some technical difficulties right away with the new fish finder, blew a fuse and had to reroute some wiring. We proceeded to paddle around Brown's Island against the wind and chop. The new paddles worked well, Aqua Bound Stingray Carbon and the other Fiberglass. Tested the weather channel feature on my new Uniden Voyager ultra compact VHF, but no one was broadcasting on the other channels. I felt very comfortable in my new wetsuit and PDF. We were not really expecting to catch anything but tried trolling a bit and throwing plugs towards the tules.

My brother heard a splash and looked over to find me practicing self rescue. He thought it hilarious and proceeded to snap a few pictures. I felt very comfortable getting back in the kayak in the wind and chop. I do know it is going to be a different story in the ocean with the swells and wind, but felt I needed to start somewhere. We had a great time enjoying the water and wildlife roaming around on the banks.

Till next time,
Ray

Nice report. I look froward to seeing you on not in the ocean up here in Sonoma County when rockfish opens. Looks like you have your kayak rigged real nice. Way to go on the self rescue. Practice makes,  well it makes it not an unknown. Thats what it makes. :smt006

Glad to hear you got out, Ray.
I was just thinking about self rescue practice myself - the more the better.

Awesome Ray! Hope to hook up soon. Your mom and I talked a lot up at Daves party. She wants me to keep an eye on you out on the ocean. Lol

Thanks for the kind words guys. I can't wait to hook up with a lot of you this year and learn a few things.

Jeff - My mom mentioned you guys had a discussion about fishing in the ocean and you keeping an eye on me. I got a laugh, I need someone there to keep me from drifting out to sea. She also mentioned your girlfriend wasn't too happy about you fishing in the ocean, so I guess we better keep an eye on each other. Can't wait for the season to open!!   :smt003

I think we can start a concerned girlfriend support group to maximize our fishing time.  :smt044

Nice report, practicing self rescue is smart and something I need to do before big blue...
