hello everybody :smt006

Me and my GF are going up to Humboldt On 5-8-09 to 05-15-09.
I live in the L.A. area and yak fish the Malibu area As much as I can.
I would like to get out and get some rockfish, lings.
But am a little hesitant to paddle out alone into unknown territory!!!
Will play it by ear when I'm up there!!
So if any of you local guys mind if I tag along during one of
your outings.
Thanks, hope to meet and fish with some of you nor-cal yakers...................

Hi Zuman, welcome!

Abking and Domenic are the local Humboldt boys.

Unfortunately rockcod/lingcod fishing from a boat doesn't open up until May 15 on the North Coast.  You could try for Halibut, Sharks or Rays though.

You can still fish off the rocks or jetties.  The surf perch should be showing up around King Salmon soon.  You could also do some crabbing, although I hear it has been a rough season.  I have only picked up a few on my trips over.

Abking has a "little" get together taking place in Shelter Cove May 15-17th.  Check out the Gimme Shelter III post.  If you can extend your stay, you might consider coming over.

Take care, Matt

There won't be a whole lot going on in the rivers at that time.  Possibly a Klamath Spring Salmon, but that's a flighty run and catching one can be a life's work...  not to mention that it's over an hour north of Eureka.

My advice would be to check out the lagoons.  Google Humboldt Lagoons State Park and fishing and you should come up with something.  Hawk ("Swellrider" on this board) runs Humboats out of the marina in Eureka - tap into what he's got going and you'll score on some fun.

Good luck!

Welcome!

I would do what ever I could and move the date a week ahead for the rockfish opener. But if you cant, the surf perch will be hot and maybe the dungies will have made a beach run although that usually happens in spring.

Ruth Lake has a decent population of trout and some kokanee and tons of crappie and bluegill.
It is out Hwy 36 about halfway between Red Bluff and Fortuna. Slow troll a half a nightcrawler behind a wedding ring or a mini herring dodger. Power bait is the choice for bank fisherman. Not to forget the bass fishing but thats not my M.O.

Well thats my two bits, good luck!

If you're not living on the edge - you're taking up too much space!
