Met my friend down in San Diego, who was attending a conference. We planned to fish Saturday morning around 7 a.m. , unfortunately the kayak shops don't open until 9 a.m. ., better still the shop owner was late and didnt arrive till 10 a.m.. Low tide was 6 am and high tide was 12, The window for Spotted Bass was effectively 8 till 12!! We got on the water at 10:45 and started throwing small fish traps on the eel grass, I had programed in fishing spots on my gps the night before and we started hitting them. Fished till noon , and it was no love!! Met a guy on a hobie who told us he had been catching bass all morning but the bite had died off about 11 am.  We fished a variety of different lures the next 2 hours, trying more eel grass, rip rap and sandy bottoms. Weather was nice around 60. Finally the wind picked up about 2 oclock and we headed back to return  the kayaks. It was my buddy's first time fishing from a kayak, and he had a great time!! I was suprised the rental shops opened a 9 on a weekend, and more suprised the rental shop owner told me that if we wanted to take the yaks out to the ocean there was a pier a few miles south of their location that was always good for some fish, What he didnt tell us was that we should probably wear a wet suit, carry a radio, have some sort of signaling device, know how to re board are kayak if we were to fall off and have some knowledge of ocean kayaking!! On the plus side was great weather nice bay with mostly 5 mph speed limit, great fishing, lots of yaks on the water with good knowledge of the area!!! Also saw a sweet trolling and fishing boat!!! 1st picture is my friend getting his stuck lure off the rocks, it was his first cast!!!!!!!!

nice job getting out badog.  I saw your post on plastic navy and was wondering if you made it.  When I went to SD last time I had the exact same idea (rent) but ended up not having enough time to do it.

I too am in San Diego this week at a conference. Tuesday morning I open NCKA on my laptop reading the report on Mission Bay. Great report by the way! As I look out my window I see a kayak fisherman in the water right across from my room. I watch him for quite awhile wishing I were out there. Turns out that is Mission Bay!  I'm staying at the Bahia Resort. I guess it's obvious I don't know the area very well :fish:! What an awesome place. Hope I get the chance to fish here some day. Heading home tomorrow :smt004
